Battery health is a term I only recently came across. Before that, I was oblivious to the fact that certain practices can cause batteries to die faster than they normally would. When I first heard about battery health, it kind of made me chuckle. At first, I thought it might be a joke, batteries being compared to humans, whose bad habits are often the cause of their bad health. My first thought was how can a battery be unhealthy? Were some batteries born sickly or infectious or stubborn maybe, refusing to keep their charge?

The problems they face most often spring from poor operator habits. Apparently there are certain practices that a person must use if they want to keep their battery healthy. Go figure. I’ve listed them below. There are six easy steps to follow that, when utilized, will greatly increase the life and overall health of a battery, giving it the same chance that every battery deserves!

Tips on keeping your battery healthy:

Laptop batteries and any kind of lithium ion batteries are EXPENSIVE, and probably not going to drop in cost anytime soon. Here are a few tips on how to maximize the health of your battery so you won’t, like I did, end up having to constantly drop a cool $100 for new lithium ion batteries.

Tip 1) You actually have to use your battery. A battery, in many respects, is just like the human body.

Tip 2) Fully drain and fully charge the battery every two to three weeks. For some reason that I haven’t figured out, batteries like to occasionally be taken to the edge.

Tip 3) Fully charge a new battery before using it. New batteries need to be broken in, just like a car engine, before using normally.

Tip 4) If you’re ever not going to use your battery for a long period of time (let’s say 3 weeks), take it out of the laptop and store it somewhere cold. This way, it won’t be in danger of wasting away inside of your laptop.

Tip 5) Stay away from extreme temperatures. This isn’t just for the health of your battery. This is for the health of your whole laptop. Don’t leave laptops in cars or other potentially dangerous places. Just don’t

Tip 6) There are some pretty good computer programs out there that maximize and monitor the health of your battery, letting you know exactly how healthy it is and when it’s expected to decline.
